Steven K. Smith, 68, of McArthur, was taken by the good Lord unexpectedly on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. He was born January 7, 1956, in Chillicothe, Ohio, son of the late Donald and Geneva (Downs) Smith.
Steve was a 1974 graduate of Vinton County High School. He had an outstanding love of plants and operated his own greenhouse taking great pride in his strawberries. He was also a small engines mechanic and eventually was a splicer working all over Ohio for Ameritech and H3 Construction. Steve was very proudly a volunteer firefighter and paramedic for the Harrison Township Fire Department in Vinton County for years in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Later he operated his own construction business which included being a licensed HVAC technician. Instead of retirement, Steve took on the Murray Grey cattle business selling grass fed and finished beef for ten years.
It was love at first sight when Steve and Anita met in 2005, marrying May 30, 2006. Also surviving are a daughter, Stephanie (Sean) Groce and sons, Cory and Cam; sisters, Connie (Dan) Weber and Kathy (Mike) Murray and son, Justin; and a special nephew, Travis (Regina) McGraw; as well as many nieces and nephews; finally, a special mention to Steve’s best friend who was like a brother, David (Lynn) Archey.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Wayne McGraw.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., in the chapel of R.M. Williams Funeral Service, Wellston, where a funeral service celebrating Steve’s life will follow commencing at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Elk Cemetery, McArthur.
