Elvie Gillem Lifestory

Counselor, mentor, friend, gentle, dependable, compassionate, devoted, strong, and funny, are but a few words that describe Elvie Lamar Gillem, 74, of Wellston, who passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020, at his home. He was born on April 27, 1945, in Minford, Ohio, son of the late John Harold and Vivian (Allen) Gillem. Elvie was very talented and could do anything he set his mind to. He taught himself how to communicate in American Sign Language, a skill he used throughout his career of mentoring and counseling young men. An outdoorsman and fisherman at heart, he was also very accomplished musically and could play nearly any stringed instrument including the guitar, banjo, and mandolin. In addition, he played the piano, organ, harmonica, accordion, and the spoons. A friend to many, he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his family: children, Ray Gillem, Eutona Gillem, Beverly (Homer) Young, and Tera Gillem; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; four brothers, Doug, Roger, Randy, and Wil; four sisters, Cheryl, Rosie, Phyllis, and Carolyn; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Elvie was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Timothy, Marty, and John Jr.

The family will receive friends at R.M. Williams Funeral Service on Friday, April 3, 2020, in the chapel of R.M. Williams Funeral Service, 120 W. Broadway St., Wellston from 4 to 5 p.m. A private, immediate family only funeral service will follow with his brother, Pastor Wil Gillem officiating.
