John D. Combs, 87, of Wellston, departed from this world on January 24, 2026, in Wellston, Ohio. He was born on October 24, 1938, in Carter County, West Virginia, son of the late Chester and Bertha Louise (Johnson) Combs. He leaves behind a legacy defined by service, kindness, and a steadfast faith that guided his life.
A long-time construction laborer, John dedicated much of his career to hard work and commitment to the communities he served. Additionally, he fulfilled the obligations of duty as a deputy sheriff in both Jackson and Vinton Counties, as well as a patrolman for Wellston City police. His contributions to law enforcement reflect his deep-seated desire to protect and serve others, characteristics that were evident throughout his life. Profound accomplishments marked John's journey through life. He also took pride in his volunteer work, which included helping at a homeless shelter in Circleville—an endeavor that further showcased his compassion for those in need.
John’s faith was foundational to his identity. He was a Christian from a young age, having accepted Christ at merely six years old, and he remained devoted throughout his life. As an ordained deacon, he served with humility and grace, always placing God at the forefront of his priorities. He attended Renovate Life Church of God in McArthur, whenever his health permitted, embodying the spirit of community and fellowship.
John was a kind, giving, and caring man, treasured not only for his character but for the warmth that he exuded. His life was adorned with cherished memories of loving relationships with his family and friends. He is survived by his daughters, Christine (Brian) Bauer and Mary Katherine "Sue" Combs (Tony Rose), and son, Doug (Patty) Combs. John was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren: K.C., Aaron, J.C., Rachel, Rickie, Christie, Angel, Brandi, Stephen, Paul, and Hammer, as well as a beloved great-grandfather to 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers, Cecil (Bonnie) Combs, Donald (Julia) Combs, and Curt (Shelia) Combs; and sisters, Betty (Larry) Perkins and Donna Dicus, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Marie Austin Combs, who passed away in September 1984, and his second wife, Carol Ann Rigsby Combs, who passed in 2013. John was also preceded in death by his son, John Daniel "Jay" Combs II, and brothers, Roy, Eddie, Wesley, Chester, Ronnie, Bob, and Kenny. His sisters, Marylee and Juanita, also predeceased him.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM in the chapel of R.M. Williams Funeral Service, located at 120 W Broadway St, Wellston, OH 45692. Brother Steve Curry with Buckeye Hospice, as well as John's brothers, Cecil, Donald, and Curt will officiate. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery, Wellston.
