James Edward “Mac” McConaha, 75, of Radcliff, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born August 10, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Charles and Sarah (Short) McConaha. Mac truly lived a life of service to others. In 1969, he was drafted to the United States Army, volunteering to be deployed to Vietnam ultimately serving two tours. He spent 29 years as a firefighter with the Columbus Fire Department and 27 years on their bomb squad. He was a lifetime member of the VFW 9893 in Albany and constantly volunteered his time and talents on various projects, always being sure to help others in need. He was also a VA commissioner for Vinton County and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Ray McConaha; son, Sean McConaha; stepdaughter, Sarah Ray (Rick); grandchildren, Austin and Mason Hamilton, Miles McConaha, and Joseph and Sabrina Ray; a brother, Doug McConaha (Peggy); as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mac was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Hamilton; as well as four brothers, Johnny, Robert, Dale, and Donny.
A memorial service celebrating Mac’s life will be held at the McArthur VFW on February 8, 2025, starting at 1:00 p.m.
