George E. Shifflet, 91, of Wellston, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, at his home. He was born October 17, 1933, in Alice, Ohio, son of the late George W. and Dora M. (McKenzie) Shifflet. He was a graduate of Wilkesville High School, class of 1952. A Korean War veteran, George proudly served his country in the United States Army. He married Maryellen Freeman, who survives, on June 28, 1957, and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage.
George retired from Southern Ohio Coal Company in 1999 and was a member of the UMWA #1857 for 50 years. He also worked on the pipeline as a foreman for 10 years. In his spare time, he could be found cutting timber.
In the late 50’s, George sang with Bobby Bear on the local radio station and with other local bands, something he was very proud of. He also broke horses and loved to ride in parades. He was the owner of Strip Mine Kennels for several years. He loved coon, rabbit, squirrel and deer hunting. An outdoorsman at heart, George helped with 4-H at the county fair and enjoyed watching his grandchildren show. He also attended many school sporting events and helped at “My Brothers Place” in Wellston for several years.
George was a 50+ year member of the Black Diamond Lodge #338, (McArthur Chapter, #102) of the F&AM; a member of the American Legion Post 371 and attended the Nazarene Church in Wellston.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; daughters, Georganna (Mick) Scott and April (Joe) Albright; grandchildren, Luke Scott (Matthew Smith), Dylan (Oesha) Faught, Abby (Chris) Williams, Zane Albright (Tabbi Miller), Ryan Albright, and Katie Albright; seven great grandchildren, Raina, Zariah, Hezekiah, Esmeree, Emma, Ella, Evan, and one on the way; many nieces and nephews, and special friends, Bill Parsons and Mike Young
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara (Tom) Bush, and Opal (Bernard) Kincaid; his sister-in-law, Eva (Glendon) Leach, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. in the chapel of R.M. Williams Funeral Service, 120 W. Broadway St., Wellston, where a funeral service celebrating George’s life will follow commencing at 1:00 p.m. Pastors Rick Kincaid and Jim Griffith, officiating. Burial will follow in Curry Cemetery.
