Brenda L. (Layton) Wilcox

Brenda L. Wilcox, 68, of Creola, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe. She was born December 6, 1956, in Circleville, Ohio, daughter of the late Alva and Gladys (Brady) Layton. Brenda was proudly employed by the Vinton County Local School District as a bus driver for the last 23 years. She loved her job and interacting with all the school children. She always went the extra mile to help them if a need arose, such as making sure they had gloves, coats and other items during the winter. She also worked for SOAR.

She loved spending time with her best friend, traveling to “Amish Country” and shopping. She especially loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. Brenda would often host bonfires on her immaculately kept property and other parties in which her niece and other area kids always looked forward to. She had a way of making time spent with her interesting and fun… almost imaginary.  She was a lover of animals and cared for the strays. She loved watching her favorite show, Gunsmoke, which reminded her of simpler times gone by.

Brenda was a strong-willed lady, maybe even a bit stubborn as was evidenced by her fight against pancreatic cancer. Her love, compassion, and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving family: children, Jennifer Crego, Cain (Laura) Crego, and Lauren (Lillee) Wilcox; grandchildren, Noah Sheets, MariAnn Crego, Pheonix Lively, Winter Lively, and Kingston Martin; a sister, Connie Roberts, a brother, Mike Layton; as well as a niece, Jessie Davis, great-niece, Brenlee Hinkle; and her best friend, Tina Duff.

In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Todd Wilcox; sisters, Marilyn Ward and Sandra Davis and a brother, Jeff Layton.

A funeral service celebrating Brenda’s life will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., in the chapel of R.M. Williams Funeral Service, 120 W. Broadway St., Wellston. Burial will follow in Elk Cemetery, McArthur.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from 2 to 6 p.m.
